The Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation is dedicated almost exclusively to fostering the production and appreciation of the contemporary arts, particularly the visual arts. To accomplish this, the Foundation provides grants to organizations in support of special projects which offer the public insights into the range of contemporary art being created by all populations in all media. Such special projects include: exhibitions of contemporary art; publications, e.g., exhibition catalogues, periodicals, brochures and publications related to the organization and its programs; acquisitions of contemporary art for the organization's permanent collection; visiting artist programs; filmmaking projects; and special events associated with contemporary art programs.

The Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation supports projects which are of high quality, thoroughly conceived, and pertinent to the community of the grantee organization. The Foundation's objectives are to advance the work of emerging and mid-career artists who are underrecognized, to provide exposure of contemporary art where it may not otherwise be seen, and to promote awareness of the collections of grantee organizations.
